Insulation Jackets for Gas Cylinders

You can protect you reference materials from temperature induced stratification with DCG's custom designed and manufactured Heated Products. We can design a solution to meet your needs. Our Electrical Engineer will assist you with your design needs.

According to American Petroleum Institute (API) the requirements are that, “the collecting and handling of Natural Gas Samples for Custody Transfer concentrate on proper sampling systems and procedures. It recognizes the critical impact of hydrocarbon dew point consideration to the overall accuracy and success of these practices and procedures. Analyses of gas samples are used for many purposes and are applied to various calculations, some of which have an impact on the accuracy of custody transfer calculations,” (API MPMS 7th Edition 5/2016).

Your reference materials represent significant investments of time and money to comply with these requirements. Exposing reference materials to temperatures below their Hydrocarbon Dew Point may cause stratification, with the heavier components settling to the bottom of the cylinder and the lighter components collecting near the top. Opening the cylinder valve in this condition will release the lighter components, altering the composition of the reference materials. When this occurs, the quality of your calibration standards will be compromised, and each component’s actual concentration will change. Certain values will increase while others will decrease. Either way, the analytical data will be inaccurate, the long hours spent analyzing will be wasted and the reference materials will be ruined causing an issue for accurate custody transfer of the product.

Our Heated Products provide sufficient power to overcome the most inclement weather conditions and/or assist in obtaining the correct constant temperature in the laboratory to maintain the standard above the hydrocarbon dew point for analysis.

DCG’s Cylinder Heat Blankets fit securely around the cylinders.

They are fastened with stainless steel buckles with a hook and loop closure to seal the opening and minimize heat loss. Paired with Heated Trace Lines, the combination ensures that the products stay in a single phase or constant temperature.

Heat Trace Lines are designed to provide freeze protection or process temperature maintenance to ensure sampling systems stay in homogeneous gas phase state. This will ensure the gas will not condensate which would cause one to lose BTUs and the density of the sample to be incorrect. The tubing is designed for use in ordinary (nonclassified) areas and hazardous (classified) areas.

    • API MPMS 14.1.6.6.1 Heat Tracing

We have them available in various sizes and applications, and DCG offers custom designs.

As per API 14.1.6.6.7, Reference Materials shall be heated for a minimum period of 4 hours after the skin temperature of the cylinder reaches 30°F (17°C) above the calculated hydrocarbon dew point. This will ensure a homogeneous mixture, eliminating the possibility of the heavier hydrocarbons from dropping out of the certified reference material. DCG’s Cylinder Heat Blankets are designed to be used on high or low pressure, steel, or aluminum cylinders of different sizes.

    • Models LP 239, LP 143, Size 300, Size 200, AL 150, and AL 30 are used only on cylinders without collar.
    • Model LP 5 can be used on both with or without collar.
    • For other models, we offer custom designs, so please contact us for more information.

Sample Cylinder Heat Blankets meet these reference materials:

    • API MPMS 14.1.6.6.1
    • API MPMS 14.1.6.6.4
    • API MPMS 14.1.1.6.7

Note:

  • *All DCG Heated Products meet or exceed the requirements of API in Chapter 14 Natural Gas Fluids Measurement, Section 1—Collecting and Handling of Natural Gas Samples for Custody Transfer.
